Happy 30th birthday to the World Wide Web. Arguably one of the most important and life changing inventions ever created.
On this important anniversary our MD Allan Clark met up with the World Wide Web inventor Sir Tim Berners Lee, the World Wide Web foundation founding director Rosemary Leith and Ex prime minister Gordon Brown discussing the past, present and future of the Internet.
The web was originally conceived to meet the demands for standardised information sharing between institutes around the world. On 30 April 1993, the World Wide Web software was placed in the public domain. Later, a release was available with an free licence for anyone to use, this became what we know and use today, and a true gift to world.
The growth of the World Wide Web has been unprecedented with around 50% on the world’s population now online. This fast adoption of this new connecting technology has led to many unexpected consequences. And while the web has created opportunity, given marginalised groups a voice, and made our daily lives easier, it has also created opportunity for scammers, given a voice to those who spread hatred, and made all kinds of crime easier to commit.
We are only now starting to appreciate the economic and social impact of the web in such a relatively short period time. And while the web has created opportunity, given marginalised groups a voice, and made our daily lives easier, it has also created opportunity for fake news, given a voice to those who spread hatred, and made all kinds of crime easier to commit.
What is clear, business of all sizes must embrace the efficiencies this technology can provide. It impacts every area of business including marketing, accounting, workflow and communication. If you’re in business, its likely your competition is looking for technological ways to increase market share right now.
From this we reflect how our own business has changed over the decades, from computer sales to a creative hub providing managed IT, cloud, security and training services. From our humble beginnings we have become a company best known for digitally promoting & connecting businesses, all thanks to the web.
We now actively invest in retail premises serving as a base for manufacturing, support, training, hosting and as a creative centre….oh and anyone can just walk in a buy stuff too!
Helping our clients adapt to do business challenges in this new digital era is what we specialise in, we understand the importance of empowering businesses with technology using methods that are not overwhelming whilst producing tangible results.
Over the last 30 years the web has been a platform for innovation, it has changed the way we live work and communicate. We hope lessons have been learned for the next 30 years, putting values, privacy and security at the forefront of all connected technologies and implementing a contract for the web as seen here https://fortheweb.webfoundation.org/principles/
